My logger doesn’t communicate.

FAQ

If your logger is not communicating with your RBRWS or Ruskin software please check the following:
-
Verify that you have a connection through the com port:
-
Scroll down the page if you are using RBRWS.
-
Using RUSKIN
-
Ruskin automatically connects to the logger by searching for the COM port the CPU has assigned to the USB port.  This process may take a few seconds, so please wait at least 30 s to one minute to ensure that Ruskin has found the logger.
When the logger is found it is displayed in the Navigator Pane.  You can click on the Instruments heading (Navigator pane) and see all the serial Ports on the Local Server Tab. If your logger is not listed there and the table indicates COM X --> "Transport Enabled" then there is a communication problem.  If the logger is listed then Ruskin has found the logger and is communicating with it.

Still can't communicate?
Now check the batteries:
Are they good? Check with a voltmeter, if they read less than 2.5 Volts replace them with fresh batteries.
Are they inserted correctly?  Each logger has clearly marked battery insertion directions.  Pay particular care with the 420 and 620 loggers as the batteries in the carousel have different insertion positions from each other.
Are there batteries in the logger (sorry)?

Still can't communicate?
If the logger still won't communicate then:
Check the download cable and USB to serial adaptor, sometimes the cable can fail typically at the logger connection end. Try a different cable. Try a different USB to serial adaptor.
Some USB to serial adaptors require a driver - have you loaded the driver?
Some USB to serial adaptors just don't work very well - make sure you are using the one RBR supplied.
-
Resetting the logger may solve the problem - remove the batteries and wait five minutes, reinstall the batteries (the right way).
-
Failing all these steps please contact RBR
-
Using RBRWS
Verify that you have a connection through the com port: RBRWS will indicate an error in the lower left corner "Unable to communicate with Logger on COM X - where X is the com port.
Check that the correct COM port is selected - go to the Configuration menu and select COM Settings.  Re-select the COM Port and Press OK.
Check the bottom left hand corner for a new message.  If the connection is established the message will indicate so, otherwise the unable to communicate message remains.
