RBR Data Buoy Systems

The RBR Data Buoy serves as a rugged and versatile system for monitoring of physical, chemical, and biological properties of ocean, coastal, and inland waters. This package offers a complete turnkey solution built on RBR's high-accuracy sensors, third-party instrumentation, weather sensors, and telemetry options.

General Description

Modular buoy hulls are available in a range of sizes to suit your particular application and mooring conditions. From 1.2m to 3.0m diameter, and with a buoyancy range from 200Kg to 9,000Kg the RBR buoy system can be suited to deployments in oceans, lakes, coastal cones, and rivers.

A robust RBR DBC-II Controller provides up to 20 analogue and digital I/O ports (RS-232/485, SDI-12, Ethernet) on the buoy. These ports can be easily configured by users to service the attached sensors and instruments, allowing independent sample rates for each channel if desired. Depending on the installed telemetry system, sensor data and buoy status may be viewed in real-time and/or displayed on a secure web page that is accessible via the internet from anywhere in the world. A GPS system is included to provide accurate position and clock. The buoy system includes a programmable navigation light and a radar reflector.

Power to the system is provided by 4 x 8W solar panels and a 40Ah battery. Alternative power solutions are available to suit various payloads.

Typical Sensors

Data Controller

An RBR DBC-II controller unit collects data from all sensors, including weather and RBR oceanographic sensors. Data are logged to internal 8GB Compact Flash card and may be offloaded at any time via the telemetry link or USB2.0 connection. Download datasheet here.

Telemetry

RBR offers telemetry options to suit the particular deployment environment; these include:
  • RF Modem (Spread Spectrum) - for line of sight applications
  • GSM/CDMA Modems - where coverage is available
  • Satellite Modems - for remote locations

Power

A typical configuration of QTY 4 - 8W solar panels and 40AH batteries provides enough power for year-round operation of all sensors, lights, and communications equipment in most environments. The power supply system may be customized to suit the application requirements and geographic location.
